BE CONSISTENT
I can’t believe I’m writing a chapter about consistency because in most areas of my life, consistency is not my strong suit. Although I hate to speak for Willie, since I’m the one writing this, I’ll go ahead and tell you: it’s not his either. I used to define our marriage like this: if I didn’t like something he was doing, I’d just wait a few days, and it would change.
As we’ve gotten older, I think we’re settling in our ways a little, but for the most part, Willie and I don’t do the same thing two days in a row—ever. I don’t even get ready the same way in the morning. Some days when I’m putting on my makeup, I do my eyes first. Sometimes I put my lipstick on right when I look in the mirror just because I feel like it. Sometimes I get dressed and then blow-dry my hair; sometimes I stay in my robe till the last possible minute and then throw my clothes on and head out the door. Maybe everyone changes their morning routine every day, but I would guess that a lot of you reading this have lives that are a little more predictable than the ones we live.
Our work schedule couldn’t be more different on a day-to-day basis. A typical week may look something like this: Monday meetings in the office all day, Tuesday filming a redneck waterpark for Duck Dynasty, Wednesday a photo shoot for our clothing boutique, Duck and Dressing, Thursday in pajamas all day working from home on my book, Friday hopping a plane to New York City for a press tour. And then the next week everything changes. I know all of us are busy, so I don’t tell you this to say how busy my life is, only to say that for the most part, consistency is just not our thing.
